There are dozens of neighborhoods and villages within city limits. Most have parks and trails within walking distance, their own top-notch schools, and community-centered shops and restaurants. Madison’s growing suburbs are within a 30-minute drive to the city’s epicenter. Many of them have their own downtown areas and calendar of community events.

Vilas Neighborhood

With the backdrop of the University of Wisconsin Campus and Edgewood College, the Vilas neighborhood is a highly sought-after area in the heart of Madison. The Henry Vilas Zoo is at its center. Locally owned shops and restaurants line Monroe Street. And Badger fans can easily walk to Camp Randall on game day. An entrance to the UW Arboretum and its 6-mile loop around Lake Wingra is located in the Vilas neighborhood.

Maple Bluff

Madison’s historic Maple Bluff neighborhood is its own village within city limits. The village is filled with early 20th-century charm, borders Lake Mendota, and has its own parks, marina and golf course. Maple Bluff is tucked away on the east side of Madison. And it’s just a short drive from downtown. But the quiet streets and beautiful lake views make residents feel even farther away from the  hustle of the city. Maple Bluff is also home to the historic Wisconsin Governor’s Mansion.

Shorewood Hills

Another village within city limits, the rolling hills of the Shorewood  neighborhood are dotted with historic and architecturally unique homes. Some of which overlook the shores of Lake Mendota. The  neighborhood feels far from the city with its wooded yards, and access to hiking and biking trails. But it’s bordered by the UW campus and hospital, Blackhawk Country Club, and the chique Hilldale Shopping Center.

Regent

Regent Neighborhood encompasses University Heights, one of Madison’s very first suburbs. Located close to UW-Madison, the neighborhood has attracted many professors and other business people. It is home to some of Madison’s most architecturally historic homes! It’s also home to a handful of local shops, including a food co-op, coffee shop, and art gallery. The neighborhood is a pedestrian and bike-friendly area. Kids walk to and from school at Randall Elementary and West High School. The Southwest Commuter Bike Path and Campus Drive Bike Path connect the neighborhood with downtown Madison and other areas of the city’s west side.

If you’re looking to move to Madison, but prefer to avoid the busyness of the city, consider one of the many great suburbs. Most of these suburbs are within a 20-30 minute drive of downtown Madison, but offer a quieter, small-town feel.
